Over 50% of workers will start their day already under-hydrated and will only replace 1/2 of the fluid lost as sweat – as they don’t have the knowledge of a proper drinking program. Add to the high sweat rates and high electrolyte loss in extreme environmental conditions. Workers can finish the day extremely dehydrated.

Involuntary dehydration is a major concern during a workday (especially as sweat increases). It is a phenomenon of replacing water without replacing electrolytes. THORZT replaces water alongside electrolytes
– restoring the optimal fluid: electrolyte balance and preventing this occurring.

When we sweat, we don’t just lose water, but also essential salts and minerals known as electrolytes. Electrolytes control the osmosis or movement of water within the body (water retention) as well as play a large number of other key roles within the body. Common electrolytes include Chloride, Sodium, Potassium, Calcium and Magnesium.

When the body loses fluid and electrolytes, both must be replaced for the body to rehydrate, retain fluid and return to efficient functioning before heat illness sets in.

When we sweat, we don’t just lose water, but also essential minerals like sodium. There is a large variation as people lose different amounts of sweat and sodium. You can lose anywhere from 0.5L – 2.5L of sweat per hour of exercise/work and 230mg – 1.6g of Sodium out/ L of sweat.

– To calculate your sweat rate, an easy way is to weigh yourself before and after a shift as 1kg weight loss equates to 1L of fluid loss.

– Signs you are losing lots of salts during work – you don’t need a sweat testing machine… you can do it on your own.

a. Salt crystalising on the clothes / hats etc – you might see white marks staining your clothes/hats (and in hot, dry conditions it may even dry on your eyebrows, face arms etc)

  1. The darker your clothes, the greater visibility
  2. If you are sweating lots (it may just be that there is more sweat, so more salt – either way need to replace the lost salts)

b. Sweat tastes salty/sweat stings your eyes
c. Craving salty foods
d. Postural hypotension – where you feel faint when standing up after exercise/heavy work
e. Muscle cramping

None on these signs on their own mean that you have very salty sweat. However, the greater number of these signs (if 3-4+ are common) could indicate that you have a greater amount of salt in your sweat, and you may need to consume more salt (especially in the heat) through consumption of fluids and/or eating more foods containing salts.

Sodium is directly related to the control of body water, enhancing water absorption. The greater the sodium concentration of the hydration beverage the greater the restoration of fluid balance. Sodium also stimulates thirst, which increases voluntary drinking (the right saltiness actually increases voluntary fluid intake)

Current guidelines suggest limiting total daily sodium intake to 2,300 mg to prevent any health issues like kidney stones or heart disease. However, this may need to be adjusted as you lose sodium in your sweat. Remember when you sweat, you are losing water and minerals like sodium. There is a large variation as people lose different amounts of sweat and sodium. You can lose anywhere from 0.5 –  2.5L of sweat / hr of work/exercise. Of that we can lose 230mg – 1.6g of Sodium/L of sweat. So, knowing if you are a high sweater will help determine if you need to replace more fluids/salts through drinks and food.

THORZT is a supplementary form of electrolyte replacement (as well as amino acids and vitamins), encouraging fluid intake and allowing for foods to make up some sodium loss replacement. There are benefits to balance!

a. THORZT only accounts for a small percent of a person’s salt intake, so it’s really a matter of educating workers on their diets and fluid consumption.

THORZT provides free toolboxes and online education around hydration and ensuring you are hydrated before, during and after work.

Fluids of all types are safe because they increase urine output and that’s a big goal, so drink up.

It’s not all about drinking electrolytes, they aren’t the silver bullet – it’s more about getting back to the basics and where THORZT can play a role in your Heat Stress Management and Hydration Solution by offering support and education resources along with the hydration products, cooling apparel and coolers. The THORZT brand is built on experiences. It is Aussie made and was founded by four mates, all elite-level athletes, a couple of them Olympians, who identified that sustained hydration – just as experienced in sporting events – was being sought in the industrial workplace where dehydration is a factor reducing work efficiency and safety.

THORZT exists to hydrate hard work of every kind, and hydrate a mate. THORZT’s proprietary blend of vitamins, minerals and aminos have been engineered to quickly rehydrate you and have you performing at your best for longer. The range of flavours help to accommodate everyone and their choosing a favourite is easy.

THORZT contains less than 4% sugar in all food products and under 1% in the solo shots. The 99% sugar free option ensures the entire workforce can have the electrolyte drink (diabetics, diets etc) and the low sugar options (ICYPOLES, Liquid concentrates, SSMIX6) are specifically designed to optimise hydration and provide a slow release of energy.

All THORZT drinks are HYPOTONIC – containing less than 4% carbohydrates. These drinks have osmotic pressure lower than body fluids and have a faster rate of absorption than water alone. What does this mean?

– It is best used for rapid rehydration!

ISOTONIC DRINK – sugars (4-8% sugar). As the sugar amount increases, the drink becomes isotonic and is taken up by the body about as quickly as water. It is intended to quench thirst and provide energy to the body (sugars) – best for intense sport (1hr exercise).

HYPERTONIC – If a drink contains 8% or more sugar, the drink essentially becomes an energy drink, and hydration is secondary as the body’s ability to absorb the solution is slowed.

The symptoms of dehydration are difficult to determine in the early stages, but can include dryness of the
mouth and thirst, dry warm skin, dizziness or cramping in the arms and legs.

As dehydration increases, signs may include:

• Irritability

• Drowsiness

• Irrational thinking

• Skin inelasticity

• Facial Flushing

• Increased Pulse rate

• Darker urine

• Passing less urine than normal

• Sunken eyes

• Headaches

• Delayed reaction time

• Decreased cognitive ability

Drinking too much water can be dangerous and can lead to water poisoning (hyperhydration). This happens when excessive water intake affects the balance of electrolytes (mostly salt – sodium) causing them to be diluted in the blood. When the sodium levels become dangerously low, a condition known as Hyponatremia can result.

Dehydration adversely affects work productivity, safety and morale. It is important to understand that 50% people start their day in a dehydrated state. Reduced output and careless work practices can result and contribute to serious accidents in workplace.

• At just 1% dehydration, performance starts to decline, heart beats 4 b/m quicker (blood is thicker and harder to push around).

• At 2% dehydration performance can decrease by up to 6-7% (in hot working environment), with a noticeable decline in mental performance and visual-motor skills. Perception if effort starts increasing.

• At 3% dehydration, worsening performance with delayed reaction time, a decreased cognitive ability – a blood alcohol content of 0.08 has these effects – so if there is alcohol /drug policy onsite – why isn’t there a hydration policy?

• Did you know at 0.08BAC drivers are 5 x more likely to be in a car accident!

• At 9-10% you are likely to be in a coma

THORZT advocates the need for water as well as electrolyte drinks to ensure the worker understands the principles and benefits of a proper hydration program. The main aim of THORZT oral hydration is to make the ingested fluid available for use within the body as quickly as possible.

THORZT has been developed by elite athletes for Industrial Athletes. We have developed an Industrial Athlete Hydration Program (IAHP) to assist drinking habits, removing “drink when thirsty” or “drink when have time” – to drinking small amounts of fluid frequently over set periods of time.

THORZT holds a better safe than sorry attitude towards drinking THORZT while pregnant, as our products contain Amino acids and vitamin B/C as well as a lower amount of sugar. As a result, the THORZT food products fall under the Formulated supplementary sports foods (FSSF) and require the warning labels listed in the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code – Standard 2.9.4 – Not suitable for children under 15 years of age or pregnant women: Should only be used under medical or dietetic supervision’

This does not mean that THORZT products are unsafe, it just means that it contains amounts of ingredients to take it away from a drink and into the food group.

The recommended ratios of THORZT to be consumed is:
Working Outdoors – 3 water : 1 THORZT | Working Indoors 6 water : 1 THORZT

This amount is a general guide, as each of us will have different sweat rates under different environmental (heat, PPE, humidity, exertion) and personal (acclimatisation, illness, age, weight) conditions. As these conditions change and your sweat rates increase, the amount of THORZT required per day may increase.

Fatigue is sign of Dehydration as your blood is thicker and your heart is working harder to pump oxygen to your body organs. Reduced oxygen to the brain can make you more tired and less alert.

So THORZT can assist in keeping you energised by staying hydrated. It does not contain any caffeine.

THORZT comes in a range of different forms: drink powders (50x3g sugar free and 6 x 26g low sugar powder), 600ml (makes 10L) concentrates and 15 x 90ml icypoles to suit your needs. Powders and concentrates are quick and easy to use when mixed with 600ml water for immediate hydration. The icypoles aid in hydration and performance to lower core body temperature through crushed ice ingestion.

THORZT can also assist with you with drink-bottles, coolers, hydration backpacks, cooling apparel, as well as our range of hydration awareness accessories.

All of our drink bottles and coolers are BPA-free. The coolers are designed with superior insulation to maintain coolness and have an impact resistant exterior.

Heat stress and dehydration often go hand in hand. When dehydration increases, the body releases less sweat, reducing the cooling effect and increasing the risk of heat stress. It does this to slow the amount of fluid lost from the body – a natural survival mechanism.

THORZT’s Cooling apparel such as vests, scarves, towels and ties literally assist in cooling your skin, which in turn helps to regulate your core body temperature. In warm or humid climates, cooling is critical for many sports / industries and has many benefits for performance.

THORZT products are sold across the globe through our resellers. THORZT does not sell direct to the public. To find the closest distributer, our premium partners can be found on the stockist page or call us today on 1800 THORZT.

THORZT receives requests daily to sponsor teams and sports. As much as we would love to sponsor everyone, it is sometimes not possible. We would love to hear your story and if we can assist in any way, we will – so please reach out to us at 1800 THORZT or info@thorzt.com.
